Meal prep books divide on a structural question that has little to do with recipe quality: does the book hand you a shopping list, or leave you to reverse-engineer one from a pile of recipes. Volumes built around a single grocery list covering a week of meals are doing the difficult part for you, sequencing dishes so that one bunch of herbs and one roast chicken feed three different plates instead of rotting half-used. A collection of 100 to 150 standalone recipes is a different tool: useful for variety once you already know how you shop, but it will not give back the Sunday planning hour. The second test is whether storage guidance is specific. Real meal prep instruction tells you how many days a cooked grain holds in the fridge, which sauces must be packed separately, and what freezes and thaws without going watery, whereas a book that stops at plating is an ordinary cookbook with a label on the cover. Look at yields too, since something written for four portions divides neatly into two days of lunches while a recipe making six or eight commits you to the same meal until Thursday.
